With a sluggish economy, high unemployment rate and soaring gas prices, now is the time to cash in on all of the bad stuff and make it a positive boost for you in the long run.
Let’s face it, we are a country that is unfit and overweight BUT we also have heart and resiliency. There is no better time than right now to exercise your resiliency and create some good out of whatever you face.
This article focuses on ways to leverage hard times for getting in shape. It may be the best thing that ever happened to you.
1. Reduce your food budget by reducing calories.
Take the time to figure out how much is enough when it comes to daily food consumption and plan your diet accordingly (usually 1400 – 2000 calories a day per healthy adult). Eating less food means buying less food. And the good news is that the more nutrient packed your calories are the less hunger you will feel throughout the day. Focus on whole grains (beans and rice are very affordable and make wonderful burritos and pilafs) as well as vegetables and fruits (grow them yourself if possible – especially blueberries). And remember, an excellent source of protein and Omega 3’s is good old fashioned tuna packed in water.
2. Become an activist and be active.
Rebel against the high fuel prices and commit to carpooling, taking the bus, riding your bike or walking to school or work. If you carpool or take the bus find a way to add a short walk to your destination. If you walk or bike then that means you will have added exercise to your daily routine for a higher purpose than vanity – because you’re not going to take it anymore! Boycotting high fuel prices in exchange for physical activity is great for you and the environment.
3. Take a summer vacation in your own hometown.
Regardless of where you live, there is something interesting about it. It has history, its own special beauty and locally owned businesses. Treat yourself like a first time visitor and go to a museum, visitor center, hiking trail or business that you have never been to before. Enjoy what is special about where you live. Pretend you are a tour guide for an out-of-town visitor and treat yourself to all that is special about your digs – and for free! Make it a walking adventure and you will shape up along the way.
4. Ditch the beverage and drink water.
The best beverage in the world hands-down is water – and it’s free (usually). Did you know that thirst is oftentimes mistaken for hunger? The next time you feel hungry grab a glass of water and wait 10 minutes before eating. To spruce it up add lemon, orange, watermelon or cucumber. And take note, it’s very hip to keep the price of your restaurant bill down by requesting water with a twist of lemon or lime. It shows you are health conscious with good taste and you have the self-confidence it takes to avoid the wasted calories and additional cost of beverages.
